United Bamboo consists of designers Thuy Pham and Miho Aoki. They are based in New York City.
United Bamboo is a label and a lifestyle. Launched in 1998 and now expanded into a cultural project, United Bamboo has established itself as a pioneer in fashion design and creative collaboration with downtown artists, curators and musicians under the direction of Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham. Launched by Miho Aoki who moved from her native Japan to study at FIT in 1995, she was formerly a design assistant at the New York based fashion/art collective, Bernadette Corp. Thuy Pham, a native of Vietnam, was the designer for Bernadette Corp. As United Bamboo they continue to expand their conceptual reach through collaborations with a diverse community of artists. Multidimensional in scope, and focused on fostering the new and experimental, United Bamboofs revisioning of classic American sportswear embodies this spirit as demonstrated in their runway debut in New York for Fall 2004.
United Bamboo provocatively plays on and reinterprets the All-American, implementing innovative pattern making techniques and subtle juxtapositions that turn the notion of preppy on its head. Grounded in the tradition of a distinctly American chic, United Bamboo captures refined differences in their clothing designs that are always original and elegant in presentation. All expertly crafted to meet the standards of an affordable avant-gardism, these multiple offerings have found a home in the first United Bamboo store, designed by architect Vito Acconci, which opened in mid-September 2003 in Tokyo, Japan and another with the opening of the new Menfs store on Sept.29th , 2006 in Harajuku.
Besides having a collection, united bamboo under the independent label United Acoustic Recording released their first compilation CD of experimental music by downtown musicians that was organized by former Black Dice drummer Hisham Baroocha in 2003, follow by many more releases that including Rusty Santos, Terrestrial tones ( Avey Tare of Animal Collective and Eric Copeland of Black Dice), Panda bear (of Animal Collective),and Holy Shit.
United Bamboo continues to push the boundaries of fashion. Promoting a visionary ethos of design, UB is inspired by and inspires those working independently and within a downtown community of unconventionality, and with hopeful intention, the larger, diverse world beyond.
