Kim Gordon is a founding member of the legendary New York City rock band Sonic Youth.
Gordon has been performing and recording with the band since its inception in the early 80s. In addition to releasing over 16 albums with Sonic Youth, Gordon has been involved in numerous collaborations with other artists and musicians. She has played guitar/vocals in the band Free Kitten alongside Julie Cafritz and Yoshimi (of the Boredoms and 00I00). In the early 90’s she co-formed the clothing label X Girl with Daisy von Furth. Gordon has recently created clothing designs for Urban Outfitters. Throughout the eighties she wrote articles for Art Forum, ZG and Real Life magazine among others. She continues to make artist books.
In parallel, Gordon continues to produce work as a visual artist. Her work has been widely exhibited across the US, Japan and Europe. Her exhibition titled Kim's Bedroom was shown in Eindhoven NL’s MU space and Tokyo’s Parco Gallery, and included drawing, paintings, and live music by artists such as Rita Ackerman, Mark Gonzales, Spike Jonze, Jutta Koether, Susan Cianciolo and others. This resulted a limited edition book and CD published by Purple (Paris, FR). Recent exhibitions include Stairway, Is It My Body? (Participant Inc., NYC, April 2003), Against All Evens (Gothenburg Biennale, 2003), Club In The Shadow (with Jutta Koether @ Kenny Schachter: ConTEMPorary, NYC November 2003), Music Is A Better Noise (PS1, NYC 2006), Dead Already (NYC, Reena Spaulings Fine Art 2007) and Reverse Karaoke (with Jutta Koether, Cross Lake Atlantic exhibition, Galleria Enrico Fornello, Prato Italy 2007)
Kim Gordon has been involved in numerous creative collaborations with other artists and musicians, including Tony Oursler and Phil Morrison (Perfect Partner, the Barbican, London 2005, in duo with her husband Thurston Moore (Mirror/Dash), Lydia Lunch (Harry Crews), Alan Licht and Jim O’Rourke (Supreme Indifference) amongst others. She has also appeared in films by Raymond Pettibon (Weatherman ’68), Gus van Sant (Last Days), Olivier Assayas (Boarding Gate) and Todd Haynes (I’m Not There).
